Why Your Gutters Need Replacement

As the weather changes and more rain comes Melbourne’s way, now is probably a good time to give your existing guttering the once over.  To help, we’ve produced a short checklist of things to look out for – these are problems that shouldn’t be ignored and are a sign that your guttering needs replacing.

1.    Standing water in your gutters is a definite sign that your guttering is no longer performing the way it should and needs replacing.
2.    Visible signs of wear and tear to your guttering.  Look at every square inch of your guttering, checking for any signs of sagging, pulling away from the roofline and hanging down, bent seams, dents or cracks.
3.    Poor drainage.  When you’re guttering no longer drains adequately, it can create all kinds of problems outside and inside your home.  You can tell if your guttering isn’t draining properly by listening to the water flow.  If you can hear water sloshing about and hitting the ground, this could be indicative of misaligned or blocked guttering.  Seeing puddles form around your home is another sign of poor drainage.
4.    Rusty gutters.  Rust indicates that your guttering has lost its weatherproof protection, and if you can see any rust, it’s time for a repair job or new gutter installation melbourne.
5.    There are visible gaps.  Either between seams or connections, or between the gutters and the fascia boards.  Any gaps will lead to water escaping where you don’t want it!
6.    Regularly finding nails or broken fasteners on the ground.  More than likely, you’ve got some seriously loose gutters, which need sorting out quickly.
7.    Water is leaking into your roof.  Surprisingly, leaks into your roof space don’t necessarily mean you’re roof needs repairing (although this is certainly worth checking) - clogged, damaged, or worn roof gutteringlets water build up along your roofline and eventually it has to find an escape route.
8.    Signs of damp inside your home. Leaky guttering allows moisture to enter your home, which in turn leads to mould growth or damp patches on walls and ceilings.
9.    Water damage to the exterior of your home.  Peeling paintwork, water or rust stains, and warped, soggy wooden sections are all indicators that your guttering is overflowing, creating backsplash onto the exterior of your home.
10.    Water channels are forming in your landscaping or parts of your landscaping are washing out or eroding. These are signs your gutters are not performing properly.
